L&S Cryogenics offers state-of-the-art cryo-treating services. Widely used in cutting bits for machine tools and large band saw blades, L&S has begun to apply this process to various parts used in the oilfield. Downhole drill bits, centrifugal impellers, pump shafts and blender wheels are some examples. All processes are computer controlled by software written for the particular application.
This process is similar to heat treating, with additional beneficial properties. Components are treated by placing them in a super-insulated chamber where the temperature is precisely controlled by a Nitrogen gas purge. Once the part reaches cryogenic temperature at approximately -300F (-195C) metallurgical properties begin to change. The part is allowed to “soak” at this temperature for up to 36 hours, depending on the material and design. After this, the part is gradually allowed to return to ambient temperature.
The result is a part or component that is free from microscopic soft spots, reducing or eliminating stress cracks and wear. The metal grain structure is relaxed and aligned, resulting in a “tougher” part. This change has been well documented in many cases. Life expectancy for cutting tools and abrasive surfaces has been increased from 40% to 400%, depending on the materials and application. All this without changing the hardness.
Liquid Nitrogen is the only consumable used for this process resulting in a very economical service. For less than 10% of the cost of your part, we can extend its life considerably. Call or email us to see if Cryo-Treating would benefit you.
